Speedway Properties is a locally-owned commercial real estate company based in Lincoln, Nebraska that owns, develops, manages, and leases residential, retail, office, and industrial properties throughout Lincoln. Our tenants span the spectrum from national retail brands to small start-up businesses, from local non-profits to large publicly-traded corporations.

Established in 1961, Speedway Properties has a history of redeveloping older buildings and has earned numerous awards and public recognition for a number of projects which have had a positive impact on the community. We have also developed retail shopping centers, strip retail, and flex space to meet market demand in different areas of Lincoln. In addition, we have negotiated sale-leaseback transactions, build-to-suit lease agreements, and land leases with numerous tenant partners.

As a co-founder and general partner, Clay leads the Speedway Properties team. Clay earned a Bachelor’s of Arts Economics degree from Stanford University, graduating with distinction.

He also earned a Master of Science in Engineering Management from Stanford University. Prior to re-joining Speedway on a full-time basis, Clay worked with the Booz Allen & Hamilton consulting firm in New York City and the Hellman & Friedman investment banking firm in San Francisco. Clay is active in Lincoln, having served on dozens of community organization’s boards.

He currently serves on the Nebraska Educational Telecommunication Commission, Bemis, LPED and on the UNL-Sheldon board.

As a co-founder, Craig leads the Speedway Property Team’s design and construction teams.

Craig attended the University of Nebraska and studied architecture and marketing. His creative design and innovative renovations have made some of the Speedway Properties the most unique in the market.

Craig has served on various boards including the Haymarket Development Corporation Board.

Lauren Smith, Vice President, joined Speedway Properties in 2023. Lauren earned her BSBA and MBA from Creighton University, graduated with distinction. She was named BIG EAST Scholar of the Year, the Rev. Carl M. Reinert Female Athlete of the Year, and a NCAA Woman of the Year finalist. Additionally, she was awarded Creighton’s Heider College of Business Entrepreneur of the Year in 2017 and received All-American honors in Volleyball.

Prior to rejoining Speedway, Lauren was Vice President at the nation’s largest privately held servicer and provider of commercial real estate debt and equity, Northmarq Capital. Her expertise in property valuation, acquisitions, and financing will support Speedway Properties’ project development, leasing, construction, and financing needs. Lauren also recently completed Stanford’s Executive Education Leadership Program, receiving her certificate in Negotiation Strategies and Leadership in October 2023.

Josh joined Speedway Properties in January 2021 as Controller, responsible for overseeing the accounting department. Josh has 20+ years of corporate accounting and finance experience working for a variety of both public and privately held organizations. Prior to joining Speedway, he was Controller, US Operations of Ritchie Bros and VP/Controller of Nebraska Book Company. He also earned his bachelor's degree in Economics and Business from McDaniel College and is a licensed CPA.

Matt joined Speedway Properties as General Counsel in 2019 after providing legal services as outside counsel for several years. Prior to joining Speedway, Matt served as general counsel for the family office of Gary and Mary West.

Matt obtained both his law and accounting degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Matt currently serves on the board of the Grand Island Central Catholic Foundation and the Grand Island Area Economic Development Corporation.

Ken joined Speedway Properties in 2004. As Director of Operations, Ken is involved in all areas including project development, construction, leasing, maintenance and daily operations.

Ken earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and has worked in the facilities/property management field for over 40 years. His 27 year history as the Administrator of the State Building Division has given him an expansive knowledge in building management, operations and project development.

Ken works with city officials, architects, engineers, contractors and tenants to initiate and successfully complete development and renovation projects. Ken is active in several business associations including the Downtown Lincoln Association Board of Directors and has been a member of the Nebraska Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Review Board for over 20 years.

Mike joined Speedway Properties in 2001 as Chief Financial Officer. He has over 30 years of experience in the telecommunications, software, real estate and manufacturing industries.

Prior to joining Speedway, Mike was Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel of Interactive Intelligence, Inc., where he led a successful initial public offering (IPO) of the Indianapolis-based software company. He also served as Vice President-Treasurer and Secretary of Aliant Communications (formerly known as the Lincoln Telephone Company).

Mike is currently a member of the Investment Committee of the University of Nebraska Foundation. He is a past Chairman of the Community Health Endowment of Lincoln and is a Past Chairman of Woods Charitable Fund, Inc.

Mike joined Speedway Properties in 2019. As Project Development Manager, Mike is involved in site planning, project management, and supports daily operational activities.

Mike earned his associate’s degree from Southeast Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Doane College, and a master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning from UNL.

His 24 years of experience in the electric utility industry, and 11 years working as an economic development aide in the City of Lincoln Mayor’s office give him a unique blend of skills to effectively manage a broad variety of Real Estate related tasks.

Mike works with local businesses, city officials, public and private utilities, engineers, and contractors to successfully complete development and redevelopment projects.

Mike is a Veteran, is active in several Fraternal Organizations, and has served on the Lincoln Action Program as well as the District Energy Corporation Board of Directors.

Shayna joined Speedway Properties as an Executive Assistant to the Smith Family and Executive Team in June of 2021. She has a passion for organization and helping people in every way she can. She performs a wide variety of administrative tasks including managing schedules, meeting/activity organization and coordination.

She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work at Union College in Lincoln, NE and has a background in administration. Prior to coming to Speedway Properties, Shayna worked as a Regional Lead Administrator to a large team of Staffing Professionals at Robert Half in Des Moines, IA.

Tom joined the Speedway Properties team in 2005. Tom’s primary responsibilities include property acquisition and negotiating lease contracts. Prior to joining Speedway, Tom earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska, his real estate salesperson’s license in 1997, his real estate broker’s license in 2000, and the CCIM designation in 2012.

Tom was the managing broker for a local residential property management company from 2000 to 2005. Tom has over 18 years of experience in commercial real estate sales, property management, construction management, and leasing.

He is active in the community and sits on the Lincoln Haymarket Development Corporation board, the Downtown Lincoln Association board, the City Mission community development board, and is a member of Leadership Lincoln’s Fellows XXXI class.

Kali joined Speedway Properties team in October 2021 as a Commercial Leasing Agent. Prior to joining Speedway, Kali earned her bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and her real estate salesperson license in 2020.

Kali was in retail banking management, insurance sales and later investment property purchases before becoming a Realtor® in January 2020.

Kali has over 4 years of experience in residential real estate sales, property management and construction management. In her free time she enjoys traveling and spending time with her dog.

Kent joined the Speedway Properties team in July of 2012. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

Prior to joining Speedway he worked 17 years for The Salvation Army as Operations Director overseeing programs, building maintenance and fundraising. He is very involved in the community non-profit sector helping to organize many community events.

Jacey joined Speedway Properties in June of 2021 after working in the Customer Experience center for a year and a half. She is currently working as a commercial property manager and serves as a member of the West ‘O’ Business Association.

In her free time, she can be found assisting her husband with his fabrication business or doting on her two pets.

Terra joined Speedway Properties as a Property Manager in February of 2020. Prior to working with Speedway Properties, Terra has 6 years of experience in the Medical Field. Brooklyn joined Speedway Properties in June of 2022 as a Residential Property Manager. She is a solutions-oriented multitasker with a wide range of experience in Customer Service over the past twelve years.

She often challenges herself to find efficiencies wherever possible and enjoys working toward her goal of continuously meeting the ever changing needs of existing and potential residents.

Iyonna joined the Speedway Properties Team in June of 2023. She graduated from Bellevue University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and brings over a decade of experience in community and human services. Her expertise includes customer service, tax preparation, and job placement services. Iyonna is driven to give back to the community in all she does and is currently continuing her education in real estate management.

Terri has been with Speedway Properties since September of 2000 and has over 25 years experience in the accounting field. She supervises all accounts payable and receivable activity and handles all the accounting functions for Speedway Properties. Prior to coming to Speedway Properties Terri spent 17 years working for Lawlor’s Sporting Goods in their accounting department.
